Pininfarina has implemented Autodesk VRED software for advanced design and Virtual Reality.

Pininfarina is an Italian company operating in the car body sector, founded in the 1930s in Turin by Battista Farina. Originally a small artisanal activity, it quickly became a leading industry in the sector thanks to collaborations with major car manufacturers such as Lancia, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot, Jaguar, and Honda. Pininfarina’s innovative techniques have always focused on advanced engineering designs, also based on aerodynamic principles, which have allowed the design of numerous vehicles following both technical and aesthetic avant-garde assumptions.

We interviewed Marco Ivancich, Head of the Virtual Lab: “Pininfarina is an internationally renowned design house, an emblem of Italian style in the world. Its activities focus on design, engineering services, and the design and production of unique or very small series cars.

The digital challenge

Marco tells us: “The activities of the Virtual Lab range from creating real-time 3D presentations and VR, Mixed reality and AR experiences, to producing renderings, short movies and 3D configurators. We were already using a visualization software but we were looking for new advanced features that we found in VRED. We had to find a system to analyze technical details before production of components with both internal staff and the end customer. The goal we set for ourselves was to bring information throughout the industrial plan, from the technical office to production.”
"VRED allowed us to better integrate our activities throughout the design process, further optimizing the timing."

The solution

Marco continues: “VRED allowed us to better integrate our activities throughout the design process, further optimizing the timing. We appreciated features such as Collaboration, the ability to start multi-user VR sessions, VRED Go, to provide our customers with VR presentations in an executable file without the need for a license, and compatibility with the latest VR and MR headsets.”

The results

“One of the advantages of having Prisma Tech as an Autodesk product supplier is certainly the assistance and collaboration in implementing new technologies. It has also allowed us to have direct contact with developers to find new solutions to our needs. Virtual Lab is always looking for new innovative solutions, and we think that a supplier like PrismaTech can offer us concrete help in this research.”
