The Teddy Group, a leading fast fashion company, is adopting 3D and revolutionising the prototyping process.

The company was founded in 1961 by a knitwear workshop in Rimini. In the 1970s, its owner, Vittorio Tadei, began distributing the products to wholesalers in Italy, and opened the first points of sale between Emilia Romagna and Marche. 1988 saw the development of the formula that was to make company known worldwide: franchising. The Terranova brand was founded in the same year. Then the Rinascimento brand was created in 2000 and has now been developed on a worldwide scale, thanks to an international wholesale network. In 2005, Teddy's third brand was founded: Calliope.

The company is among the leaders in the fast fashion sector. Its aim is to satisfy customers by creating a product that meets their expectations. This is possible thanks to continuous research and investment.

We interviewed Dino Di Gennaro, 3D Woven Pattern Maker, who recounts: “I have been in the fashion business for almost 30 years and have gone through several eras, including the transition from manual to 2D pattern-making. Today I am lucky enough to be working with CLO 3D which, at this moment, represents the state-of-the-art in our work. In fact, at this time, the company is asking us to speed up all our processes.”

The digital challenge

To build a company that aims at leadership in the fast fashion market, investments in creativity and technology are a must. Such investments have brought about a reduction in collection creation processes.

“With the aid of 3D we expected to improve the understanding between designers and pattern makers. There are often misunderstandings between these two figures: a drawing or a shape can be misinterpreted. So we needed a solution that could speed up design time, especially during the initial interpretation phase, which is the part of the study phase that takes the most time. With the aid of CLO 3D we can interpret the garment (in real time) and exchange opinions on it, since the tool shows it to us in its entirety." explains Dino.

The solution

"Before the advent of 3D, the pattern maker who wanted to see a fit was forced to make the pattern, send it to the cutter, have it cut and tailored and wait a day before seeing the result. What is happening today in pattern-making is a veritable revolution! CLO 3D integrates seamlessly with the 2D CAD solutions, so the pattern maker can start a design, convert it into 3D, add the details and check the proportions."

"Finally, you can convert it back to 2D and finish it to decide whether to make a final 3D model or to have a prototype made, depending on the requirements of the case in point." concludes Dino Di Gennaro.

Whether you are starting from an already existing paper pattern, or creating a new one using the software, you can simulate the fit of a garment and how the fabric hangs, achieving a very high degree of similarity to a real garment.

The results

Francesco Cesarini, Junior Pattern Maker, recounts: "I made my first sample book myself and I can assure you that it is not as easy as it looks. Having a tool that allows you to see what you are doing in real time is invaluable."

Thanks to CLO 3D, fashion designers can easily modify the design of the patterns or the combination of the same with different fabrics and colours. Additionally, the material produced in 3D can subsequently be reused to construct other garments.

Paola Tonini, Senior Pattern Maker Knit, explains: “Since we started using CLO, our work has changed considerably because all our processes have been revamped. This programme is really helping us to speed things up and experiment a great deal, in the best way and in the shortest time possible."

Using the virtual model it is, in fact, possible to assess the look and implement the variations more quickly, with fewer resources. This reduces the time and costs of the prototyping phase: fewer physical prototypes are created and modifications are made more quickly

"After experimenting with a lot of 3D software programmes, we finally chose CLO, given the slowness of the technologies offered by the competition.  CLO gives us an edge on our competitors and I think that's what the future is all about!"

These are the words of Roberto Ceccarini, Senior Pattern Maker.

“CLO 3D is a tool that radically changed my role inasmuch as it allowed me to get much closer to the product world. The software helped me combine the role of pattern maker and product researcher." Recounts Ivano Orsini, Senior Pattern Maker Denim.

"Today, in a matter of seconds, we can create variations of the same prototype, whereas before we had to have them sewn at the tailor’s and wait a day before seeing the finished prototype." These are the words of Camilla Evangelisti, Junior Pattern Maker.

3D technology allows the company to see the garment as it will look once it has been made, enabling it to make choices in advance.
