Salewa, a leading manufacturer of technical mountaineering products, uses 3D to get an immediate idea of the fit and characteristics of the garment

Salewa was founded in 1935 when Joseph Liebart set up a company to manufacture saddles and leather goods.

As of 1984 onwards, the products with the highest sales were first camera bags, then wooden ski poles and later light crampons.

In the 1960s Salewa gained international recognition as a leader in alpine innovation, thanks to the invention of the tubular ice screw, now an industry standard.

In the 1980s, the company began testing countless prototypes, working with Messner and Albert during their expeditions.

After years of challenges and competitions, Salewa is now the world's leading brand of technical mountaineering products.

We interviewed Leonardo Fumagalli, Junior Designer at Salewa, who tells us: "Our brand deals with the development and production of clothing for mountain sports. We have a strong bond with the local businesses of the Dolomites and are committed to the research and development of new technologies and materials."

The digital challenge

“I am responsible for creating the new collections and updating those currently being developed. CLO is the tool I use most each day and it has now become the number one tool for my colleagues in the office."

The main advantage of using CLO, i.e. 3D design as opposed to the old 2D systems, has been a more immediate understanding of the characteristics and fit of a garment. This was one of the main limitations that hindered us in the projects in which we were forced to use 2D. 3D facilitates communication and the transfer of the work to the development department."

The solution

Thanks to the implementation of CLO, the company has been successfully achieving goals it had set years ago. “3D facilitates communication and the transfer of the work to the development department." says Leonardo Fumagalli, Junior Designer, Salewa

Human resources need to be trained so that technology can be exploited to its full potential.

“Prisma Tech has always offered us a support service whatever our problems or doubts about using the programme.” Leonard continues

“Creating a digital catalogue enables us to replace product photos with images created by the software. I think CLO and the potential of 3D in general are the key to the development of our sector.”

The results

CLO soon became the essential tool for the development of our collections, as Leonardo explains: "Thanks to CLO, we have been able first and foremost to shorten delivery times and reduce the number of prototypes, which in most cases need very little modification because they already meet initial expectations. This has also enabled us to reduce the consumption and waste of materials."
