With the aid of 3D design software, perfect, state-of-the-art prototypes can be created, a task that is impossible to achieve with traditional, static CAD systems.

PAL is an Italian company that has been operating in the wood-based panel sector for forty years now.

The machines and systems manufactured by the IMAL-PAL Group, renowned worldwide for their high quality construction and design, increase product value while reducing production costs.

Over the past ten years, the group has adopted innovative solutions in an attempt to enter new markets (such as energy plants) and develop new systems for the treatment of waste.

We interviewed the IT Manager, Fabio Bonso, who explained how 3D technologies for data management and design have brought significant benefits to the company.

The digital challenge

Its tireless search for innovative technologies for the design of complex products, tailor-made for its clientele, has prompted the company’s decision to purchase state-of-the-art software.

“The ever-changing market has forced us to seek new solutions. After careful consideration, we have decided to implement Autodesk software.” Says Fabio Bonso.

“Thanks to Prisma Tech we have resolved a number of problems we had in the past.” The IT Manager continues.

The technologies for optimising resources and reducing waste are included in Autodesk's Product Design & Manufacturing Collection.

This package enables you to take full advantage of all the solutions specifically devised for the manufacturing sector. Through their interaction, these 3D technologies make it possible to design, simulate, store and share complex projects.

"3D technologies have allowed us to: better present ourselves on the market, reuse 80% of the projects we have done and optimise our workflow."

The solution

In order to cope with production delays and waste, the company decided to install state-of-the-art technology and professional workstations for advanced design.

Fabio Bonso recounts: “Prisma Tech has not only supported us in the implementation of software and hardware, but also in training and in the development of new projects. With the help of Prisma Tech, we have optimised project data management and communication.”

“In particular, among the Collection software, we use Vault for data management, Inventor for 3D design and the Factory Utilities application for creating factory layouts.” The IT Manager continues.

“Specifically, Vault facilitates the search for parts already designed, so that they can be used and reworked in future projects.” says Fabio Bonso.

The possibility provided by this tool to share the designs with everyone involved increases design efficiency and the accuracy of the drawings.

“Prisma Tech's support has enabled us not only to optimise data management but also to integrate Vault in our management system.” Concludes Bonso.

Autodesk Inventor, on the other hand, provides a range of controlled and effective mechanical design tools.  Thanks to this technology, designers can carry out simulations during the product design phase and collect data and feedback along with the team.

Another technology used by PAL's technical department is the Factory Design Utilities application, specifically developed to design and communicate virtual factory layouts.

This software makes it possible to: optimise machine positioning, material flow and energy consumption; prevent collisions and setbacks by detecting any possible interference; calculate the costs of project changes and increase cooperation between the various teams.

“Thanks to the Factory Design Utilities technology, we transitioned from 2D to 3D layouts. This has allowed us to make a better impression on the market and reuse already existing parts in new design projects.” says Fabio Bonso.

“We have also purchased 22 Hp Z6 workstations. Thanks to the advice of Prisma Tech, these workstations have been configured to suit our requirements.” The IT Manager continues.

In fact, the Hp workstations are extremely high-performing, making it possible to maximise productivity and simplify the management of the technical department.

“Thanks to the powerful graphics card, the visualisation of the assembly is considerably better than before.” Says Fabio Bonso

The thermal components of these workstations also keep processor and graphics card temperatures low, even under the most complex of workloads. Additionally, thanks to the privacy screen and integrated intrusion sensor, the security of the design data is ensured.

The results

“Thanks to Autodesk’s technologies and Prisma Tech’s consulting, we have accelerated production times and reused about 80 per cent of our designs.” says Fabio Bonso.

And thanks to Prisma Tech's training and support services, designers can improve their skills. Courses with technical experts enable the companies to exploit the full potential of the tools available for all sectors.

“By being able to make changes in real time and work with several technologies simultaneously, we have optimised our resources and workflows.” The IT Manager continues.

Autodesk's advanced design software supplies the tools required to create reliable, state-of-the-art designs. Using the complete package of technologies created for the manufacturing sector, all the phases of the project’s life cycle can be followed: from design through to production.

Companies today are faced with increasingly challenging consumer demands. The creation of complex products needs dynamic technologies and appropriate technical training to bring the various departments up to the state-of-the-art.
